A Black Masterpiece

It’s amazing how images on a screen can evoke emotion. I never fancied myself as an iron bending macho but nor had I thought that I’d be the one dying to break into a cry over movies. Indeed, though some do movies leave me helpless and such is the case with Bhansali’s BLACK.

The movie is brilliant. You are amazed by his ability to make a monochromatic masterpiece after his past overly colorful movies. The sets are no longer grand but so much stronger in terms of visual impact. He plays with the best color of them all and defies all accepted images of joy. For his direction and concept alone, I stand speechless.

And then the performers amaze you. A little girl that portrays the young Rani Mukherjee sent chills down my spine. Amitabh was fantastic as he nodded his head just the right amount as he falls ill in the movie. And Rani brought about new meaning to the eyes of the blind. The support cast did their job as well as could have expected.

The musical score in the background… The bleak wintry surroundings, that speak of a false white and light, and of which I have been so accustomed to in Michigan, form the exact drape for the movie. If you find time to take your eyes of the stunning performances, please appreciate the director’s fine touches.

Please watch this movie. Surely, one of the best Indian cinema has to offer.
