The return of Supercars

Supercars. Stunning machinery with fantastic looks. An ability to break 60 mph barrier within 4 seconds and then carry on to cross 200 mph. Generally two door coupes with little or no practicality. They are designed to look and drive like a jet fighter. They are what they sound. Supercars. I was quite visibly enthralled at this year’s auto show in Detroit. Not only I was amongst shiny new cars but more importantly I could sense the rebirth of the Supercar era. Until now Ferrari, Lamborghini and few other exotic manufacturers took the honors of making such cars. But more often then not, these cars would end up costing twice as much as what my dreams could afford. But now, with mainstream car makers launching super cars, my wish lists are re edited and dreams are once again ignited.

The Acura Advanced Vehicle Concept ; The NSX

The Acura NSX triggered off the lust fest. The previous avatar had gathered plenty of loyal fans but eventually it lost severely in its power output and was much too expensive for a Honda. Which is why Acura decided to blow out the critics with its all new NSX! Even if the production version of the NSX doesn’t look as futuristic as this it will still be an absolute stunner. Couple those looks with a Honda V10 engine that realizes more then 400 hp, throw in the impeccable super handling all wheel drive and the product is simply incomparable. If you are looking for precise Japanese power train engineering, crisp race car handling and perhaps a tad bit of reliability, then your list should end here.

Inspired by winning R10, The Audi R8

You say you are more likely to get excited by German Unterhose? Well, then how about the new Audi R8? Audi is no stranger to fast cars. When your sisters are Bugatti and Lamborghini, its only time before you pull up socks and make a spectacular Supercar. The R8 stance is absolutely threatening. The broad upfront grill is now standard Audi staple. The thick C pillars and low slung doors do enough to make you think twice before challenging this car. With 400 horses resting securely mid way in the car, the balance can only be fantastic. Audi’s stitched interiors and a round gear knob only make the choice an easy one.

The hybrid supercar, Toyota FT-HS

Perhaps you only looking to upgrade your Camry? The Toyota FT-HS (Or what most call the Supra) is the car for you. I must give credit to Toyota for finally implementing their over hyped hybrid technology for the right reasons. The Supra doesn’t use electric power to save a few miniscule gallons of gas but rather to provide torque curve with its electric motors that no engine can ever match. It also has a regular 400 hp engine. I have doubts that this car is likely to dislocate your eyes from eyeball sockets when it takes off. As far as the looks, the committee is still out on this one…

The easily digestable Lexus LFA

Lexus is trying so hard to garner some customers that would think of it as a sport’s car maker. When I saw the Lexus LFA, my first impression was that it was more of a replacement for the pathetic SC and not a Supercar. However the stats were certainly up there and the interiors looked fantastic. So if you are the Lexus kind, then this certainly could be it. Me? My list can only be considered complete when they release the all new Lotus Espirit. Lotus invented APX vehicle structure will be packaged with perhaps the best chassis in the universe and a 400 hp power unit, this Supercar is more then likely to rewrite the history books. Until then I wait with bated breath…
